Sky Sports are reporting Aston Villa are in pole to sign Everton left back Lucas Digne – Here’s why he’s wanted by them

Born in Meaux, France, Lucas Digne quickly made his way in the footballing world. At 6 he joined the academy of Mareuil-sur-Ourcq, before progressing to the Lille academy at age 12. He made 62 appearances for Les Dogues before being signed by PSG ahead of the 2013-14 season. After 2 years in Paris and a season on loan at Roma, Digne was signed by Barcelona as backup to Jordi Alba. After struggling for game time at the Camp Nou he was signed by Everton for £18 million. After just 2 months at Goodison he had dislodged club legend Leighton Baines and became the first choice left back. He spent 3 seasons as firm starting left back for Everton before the 2021-22 season. During December 2021, Digne began to be dropped completely by Rafa Benitez, which resulted in Digne asking to leave this January.

With a fee rumoured to be around £25 million, Steven Gerrard saw Digne as a good fit for his team and is now in advanced talks to sign the Frenchman.

With Matt Targett struggling after the loss of Jack Grealish in the summer, and Digne being so comparatively strong, it seems to be a smart move by the club, showing ambition by beating the likes of Chelsea, West Ham and Newcastle in the race for the 28-year-old.

With a high crossing accuracy and very good defensive abilities, his good attacking and defensive contributions make him one of the league’s best full backs, and would be a superb aquisition for most clubs in England.
